Insects represent one Class of animals within the Phylum Arthropods. If you do not immediately recognize an insect you may need to identify some arthropods to first determine if they are in fact insects before proceeding further. In this Dichotomous key example of Insects, insect keys are designed as dichotomous, or paired, couplets. A couplet is a choice between 2 options based on a description of a particular feature. Example: wings, number of legs etc., and one can choose which option best matches the insect being identified. This choice leads to another couplet. The process continues until the user reaches a final couplet that identifies the insect.
