A Direct Online Starter (DOS) is a method of starting a 3 phase induction motor. In a DOL Starter, an induction motor is connected directly across its 3-phase supply, and the DOL starter applies the full line voltage to the motor terminals. As shown in the Direct Online Motor Starter diagram, to start the motor, we have to ensure that the contactor is closed and the full-line voltage is applied to the motor windings. The motor will then draw a very high inrush current for a very short time, the magnetic field in the iron, and then the current will be limited to the Locked Rotor Current of the motor.
