In residential architecture, the open floor plan is related to a home in which two or more common spaces have been joined to form a larger area by removing partition walls. Heavy-duty beams (rather than interior load-bearing walls) support the weight of the floor above in open floor plan construction. An open floor plan, also known as an open concept, is any floor plan that combines two or more rooms that are typically separated by a floor-to-ceiling wall and, possibly, a door. In architectural and interior design, an open plan refers to any floor plan that uses large, open spaces while minimizing small, enclosed rooms such as private offices.
