An eco-map is a graphical representation of all the systems at work in a person's life. Individual and family counseling with ecomaps is used in the social work and nursing professions. Unlike genograms, ecomaps are a valuable tool for determining whom a child or young person considers important, whom they have close relationships with, and how they perceive the adults around them. These visual representations are very similar to genograms. However, whereas genograms show the makeup of an individual's family or surroundings, ecomaps show who is in the individual's network, connect with them, and many other things. Ecomaps, as a whole, are useful for understanding family relationships.
