A gap analysis is a technique of evaluating a business unit's performance to determine whether or not business requirements or objectives are being met and, if not, what steps should be taken to meet them. A gap analysis is also identified as a needs analysis, a needs assessment, or a need-gap analysis. In information technology, gap analysis reports are frequently used as the starting point for an action plan to produce operational improvement by project managers and process improvement teams. The gap analysis also aids in benchmarking actual business performance against optimal performance levels.
