The coupled pendulum experiment is comparable to two separate pendula joined together. When one pendulum is set off in oscillation, the energy from this pendulum is transferred to the other due to the coupling spring, causing it to also start swinging. A noticeable phenomenon of this transfer of energy is that the two pendula will swing 180 degrees out of phase with each other.
