Protofelidae is an extinct family of carnivorous mammals that lived during the late Paleocene and Eocene epochs. These animals are believed to be related to today's cats, but their exact evolutionary relationships remain unknown. Recent molecular studies suggest that they may have descended from a primitive carnivoran group known as miacids, which were small mammalian predators that arose some 58 million years ago. Though much remains unknown about the Protofelidae tree of life, paleontologists continue to uncover more clues about these mysterious early felines.
